0 commentsThe Internet has changed the way people do business. But as the Web becomes more central to consumers' lives, online fraud continues to evolve—and concerns about identity theft persist. Thus, your future in e-commerce depends on your ability to instill consumer trust in your Web site.
To find out how you can do just that, join this live ZDNet Webcast on April 2nd.
The Liquidlibrary Identity Challenge 5
0 commentsThe fifth challenge is a bit different, in that the emphasis is on typography. The client this time is GlobalThanks, a Web 2.0 startup that's about to launch its new web application designed for social networking sites. The creators of three winning designs will each receive three-month subscriptions to liquidlibrary.
The Photos.com Philter Phrenzy 1
0 commentsAt the end of each round the entries are judged by Graphics.com staff, with three that best make use of the capabilities of the plugin selected as winners. They'll receive three months of access to Photos.com, as well as copies of Plugin Galaxy, from The Plugin Site. So we encourage you to... work yourself into a Phrenzy.
A Brief History of Grids
0 commentsThis whole business of grids is so difficult for graphic designers. Most of us love them. But we’re scared of revealing any nerdy or, worse still, despotic tendencies so we jump nervously from foot to foot, simultaneously belittling and venerating the grid. We’ve got to appear to be casual about it—but not so much so that our peers think we’re grid lightweights.
The problem is partly one of association. A grid is generally a series of straight vertical and horizontal lines so, if you’re interested in grids are you "straight" in other ways too? Ultimately, it’s not the notion of the grid that is important—it’s the hand that constructs, the brain that computes, and the perspicacious eye that exploits these invisible structures. Campus Violence Poster Project
0 commentsThe shootings on the campuses of Northern Illinois University and Louisiana Technical College this past week and the tragedy at Virginia Tech University last April brought a shocking reminder of how an ordinary, daily event can turn into tragedy. This tragedy illuminates, however, the generous human impulse to want to help those who have suffered loss.
In response to this tragedy, UCDA is orchestrating a poster project. We are asking members and designers to design a poster that reflects some aspect of campus violence--the shock of the event itself, the heroism of the survivors, or the importance of crisis preparedness.
This summer, UCDA's Designer magazine will feature the posters, and include them on the UCDA website. Each one-of-a-kind poster will also be on sale through an online auction.

AbleStock Design Brief 8
0 commentsProject: A design for a mailer to promote a new sushi delivery service.
Client: The client, Blazing Sushi, is a specialist in home delivery of sushi, busily opening up new markets across North America.
Audience: Sushi has broad and growing appeal across generations and income categories. Consuming sushi at home or at the office makes perfect sense, since there is little the traditional restaurant experience can add to it.
Design Requirements: This will be a full-color mailer on card stock sent to residents and businesses near new Blazing Sushi franchises. The design requirement is only one side of the mailer, with the client adding various details regarding the product and ordering on the other side. The dimensions of the design should be in a ratio that will work for the mailer size of 8 inches wide by 4 high. The client prefers a colorful approach that conveys the brand message of trusted quality, nutritious ingredients and speeedy, reliable delivery. Photos illustrating concepts related to the product have been provided from the AbleStock.com collection, but alternative or supporting imagery from the stock.xchng site, or other sources for which the designer has permission, may also be used. The following text must be included:
The brand name: Blazing SushiDeadline: Designs must be submitted by April 17, 2008.
Other text
Handmade with the best fresh fish, vegetables, spices and seaweed.
Free local delivery
New dish: seaweed salad. Free with orders over $50.
Small text along the bottom of the mailer
Tuna fanciers take note: We don't use the endangered blue fin tuna. We use only yellow fin, which also provides leaner meat for both sashimi and nigiri.

A Type Design Process
Wednesday, March 12, 2008 0 commentsA Type Design Process
April 15, 2008; 2 pm ET/1 pm CS
Registration is free, but space is limited for the live event - Act Now!
Since the advent of the personal computer, typefaces—or "fonts"—have moved increasingly into the public consciousness and more people than ever before are making some of the typographic decisions which designers have made for decades. A look into one type designer's process reveals not only the optical and strategic considerations that go into the design of type, but also provides graphic designers and type users with a "behind-the-scenes" view which can inform their own design process & help them use type more effectively.
Presenter: Mark Jamra of TypeCulture is a type designer, typographic consultant and associate professor at Maine College of Art. He has designed and produced typefaces for over 20 years and is the founder of TypeCulture, a digital type foundry and academic resource. Mark also designs books, creates documentary films and is a partner in a collective of communication designers in Portland, Maine. His lettering and typefaces have been in numerous exhibitions and have received recognition from the Type Directors Club and the Association Typographique Internationale.

Eco-Friendly Nikes
0 commentsBack in 2006, Nike generated copious amounts of street cred with techies when it partnered with Apple and released its Nike + iPod Sport Kit, which allowS gadget-loving runners to synch their iPods via a special sensor placed inside their Nike shoes.
Now, the US athletic shoe manufacturer seems determined to win over green-minded customers, too. In January, Nike introduced the Air Jordan XX3, which uses eco-friendly materials. Then in February Nike went a step further with Trash Talk. From the sole to the shoelaces, this shoe is produced not only from ‘environmentally preferred’ materials but also recycled waste, with much of the latter coming from Nike’s own production facilities—scraps that would otherwise have been discarded.

NEXT: Design Industry News That Matters
Wednesday, March 5, 2008 0 commentsThe last time STEP checked in with our 2006 Emerging Talent alumni Andre Andreev and Dan Covert, the two had launched dress code, their New York-based graphic design partnership, on top of their day jobs at MTV. But as Andreev and Covert left MTV last June to focus exclusively on their fledgling firm, they pondered a puzzling question: Where were all the books to help young designers like them get started in the real world? "Coming out of school, we found there was little material on getting a job and the transition to professional practice," says Andreev.

0 commentsBy Tim Samara
Dateline: February 22, 2008
Premium luxury spirits are a dime a dozen. Consider, for instance, all the brands of high-end vodka currently available. Fighting for attention on a strictly visual level used to work, but within the crowded field of spirits cloaking themselves in subculture and lifestyle, the visual had better have backup. Shango is a brand of spiced rum liqueur whose brand traded on a cultural mystique to build loyalty among its target demographic, but wasn’t telling its story. To do so effectively, the brand needed to be addressed from a new vantage point— one that Wallace Church, Inc., a New York strategic branding and packaging firm, discovered when they began their research.

The EnerJar took top prize of the design competition—both a favorite of the judges and the crowd at the Greener Gadgets Conference in New York City. The EnerJar is an easy-to-build, DIY device that accurately measures the power draw of electrical appliances. Sitting between any wall outlet and the appliance (think blowdryer versus laptop), the EnerJar helps users gain an understanding of power draw, investing them in the knowlege, and leading them to reduce their electricity use.

0 commentsLOOKING FOR AN ICON examines the process by which photos become icons, revealing that once a photo is published, social forces are at work beyond the photographer's control. The film focuses on four World Press Photo winners, including Eddie Adams's 1968 photo of the public execution of a Viet Cong prisoner, an anonymous photographer's last image of Salvador Allende during the 1973 coup, Charlie Cole's 1989 photo of a lone student confronting tanks in Tiananmen Square, and David Turnley's 1991 photo of a grieving soldier during the first Gulf War.
