Here's a look at what you'll find in your copy of the new STEP:

“Each year we focus an issue of STEP on the subject of type. While it's easy to get caught up in the latest fonts or the tools we use to access and manipulate them, that's not all this issue is about. As Allan Haley, who guest-edited this issue's special type section, points out in his introduction on page 71, type's diversity is among its enduring attractions. So it's only fitting that in the articles about type that follow, the full range of human cultures, moods and technologies is explored with all the scrutiny and joy the subject deserves ..." { Read more }

“The debate over whether the spirit of the age sets the tone for design or if design determines the zeitgeist is not about to be settled anytime soon. The relationship is intimate, and no matter how one sorts it out, this year's STEP Design 100 competition was surely a product of our time." { Read more }

NEXT: Design Industry News That Matters

The last time STEP checked in with our 2006 Emerging Talent alumni Andre Andreev and Dan Covert, the two had launched dress code, their New York-based graphic design partnership, on top of their day jobs at MTV. But as Andreev and Covert left MTV last June to focus exclusively on their fledgling firm, they pondered a puzzling question: Where were all the books to help young designers like them get started in the real world? "Coming out of school, we found there was little material on getting a job and the transition to professional practice," says Andreev.

Here's what you're missing if you haven't read the new STEP:

“Every year, thousands of designers graduate from higher-education programs and many more enter the profession as bootstrappers. Some of them will emerge unheralded and become respected, maybe even leading lights in the profession. Others will have their potential gifts tagged early, but will fizzle out, switch careers or otherwise fade into obscurity. Which makes selecting those whose talents show a high likelihood of success a bit of a crap shoot—not that we haven't rolled our share of 7s. Risks notwithstanding, every year STEP makes the valiant effort to identify a short list of young design practitioners who have demonstrated early in their careers the skills and imagination that will allow them to make a lasting impact."
