Join us for our first meeting of 2008! Our guest speaker will be Michael Murphy, an Adobe Certified Expert in InDesign, and the host and creator of the popular "The InDesigner" video podcast (www.theindesigner.com). The topic will be: STYLES EQUAL SUBSTANCE.

If you think styles are just ways to standardize and speed up text formatting, think again. In the last few versions of InDesign, styles have expanded far beyond text to become, arguably, the heart of the application. Styles are both inter-connected and inter-dependent. They control, improve, and influence many other features, some of which rely entirely on styles to work at all.

In this comprehensive session, Michael explores the breadth and depth of styles throughout InDesign CS2 and CS3. From the smallest settings to the most complex relationships between styles, to features as varied as Find/Change, Text Variables, Tables of Contents, and Anchored Objects, you'll learn just how much substance there is to styles.

Copyleft and copyright

Thursday, January 24, 2008 0 comments

by David M. Berry, Marcus McCallion

'It is clear that copyright is being misdirected from its original intention to that of meeting the needs of corporations desperate to safeguard existing profits and create new markets artificially. '

Designers increasingly see the question of copyright and intellectual property as an important issue. More and more, they are concerned about being ‘ripped off’, and are told that establishing copyright is essential. But there is little understanding of what copyright is, how it works, whom it benefits or what alternatives there are. This Agenda hopes to raise awareness of the issues surrounding copyright and to empower the designer to make informed choices about how to use copyright and its alternative: copyleft.

AdPrint Festival

Tuesday, January 22, 2008 0 comments

9th Edition

Brasov, Romania
7-10 February 2008

The name of the festival says it all. AdPrint stands for great print ideas resulting from the chemistry of a very special relationship. The whole philosophy of the festival underlines the connection that bonds together people who seem to work with one brain.

The competition brings together neither agencies nor names of individuals – it depicts in front of the jury a process. Their analysis is the analysis of a bounce, of the steps taken towards the final ad, awarding the road as well as its finish.

Istock and me (I)?

Friday, January 18, 2008 0 comments
I was looking through my computer and realized that 80% of it were photos. Me being the random photo taker, I have a lot of images that are album worthy. Being the entrepreneur that I am, I decided to try and sell them on istock. I signed up, I choose my 3 samples and about a day later got an e-mail stating that:

"At this time we regret to inform you that we did not feel the overall composition of your photography or subject matter is at the minimum level of standard for iStockphoto. Please take some time to review training materials, resources and articles provided through iStockphoto. The photographs provided in your application should be your best work. Try and impress us, we want to see how you stand out from the crowd."

WTF - I thought they were good, I mean if those images didn't stand out then I'm not sure what to send them. More on this later.

ISSUE PREVIEW

Here's what you're missing if you haven't read the new STEP:

“Every year, thousands of designers graduate from higher-education programs and many more enter the profession as bootstrappers. Some of them will emerge unheralded and become respected, maybe even leading lights in the profession. Others will have their potential gifts tagged early, but will fizzle out, switch careers or otherwise fade into obscurity. Which makes selecting those whose talents show a high likelihood of success a bit of a crap shoot—not that we haven't rolled our share of 7s. Risks notwithstanding, every year STEP makes the valiant effort to identify a short list of young design practitioners who have demonstrated early in their careers the skills and imagination that will allow them to make a lasting impact."

Aviary, a collection of web based design tools

Thursday, January 17, 2008 0 comments

Submitted by Ivan on Sat, 2008-01-12 17:08. Review

Once it launches, it will be fun to check out this new project called Aviary, which is a set of many different design tools. It is targeting a semi-professional market, so it's not really us. And, it's unlikely you gonna replace your Adobe CS suite for Aviary anytime soon, but I'm sure we will find a few interesting elements in this new package that can be used together with our traditional applications.

Apparently the flagship application Phoenix is a Photoshop clone with much of the functionality ported. Another exciting title is Peacock, a powerful pattern generator. Check out the sample images. It would be interesting for me to explore the 3D app called Hummingbird and Toucan the color swatches and palettes creator. Check out the whole long product range of Aviary.

Have I mentioned the most interesting part about the project? It's web based. Ironically the whole platform is based on Flex, which is an Adobe product to create rich internet applications. While I can imagine vector editing on a web based interface, but I'm highly skeptical about opening a 500MB image or editing a 10GB video in a browser.

I can't imagine an application made to run in a browser — no matter how well written — can outperform a desktop application in speed. But I can see how these set of tools can bring value into your work process in other ways. I can see your productivity soaring because you can use the power of internet connectivity to share and collaborate with your friends and coworkers to work on projects together. Same way as Google Doc's limited feature set is more useful than using the desktop MS Office or iWork packages in a highly team oriented environment, I can imagine Aviary to be a good tool to create and trade design work by collaborating online within a community.
