Review: Web Creation Made Easy

By Mario Morejon, CMP Channel

From the January 29, 2007 issue of CRN Tech
Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) is breathing new life into Web authoring and content creation with Expression Studio, its new Web development suite that takes on design software stalwart Adobe (NSDQ:ADBE).

Microsoft, Redmond, Wash., is getting serious about Web authoring for corporate professionals. Almost no traces of FrontPage, its previous stab at Web authoring tools, are found in Expression Studio. Microsoft reduced the FrontPage method of creating Web content to a simple backward-compatible deployment option to help transition customers. Read More Channel Web Network

Liquidlibrary Identity Challenge 4

Wednesday, February 20, 2008 0 comments
Project: Business card and letterhead design for DreamOfProvence.com, a Web site selling French bath and body care products. Liquidlibrary Identity Challenge 4

Client: DreamOfProvence.com is a new commercial venture by a British author who became famous from his books recounting his experiences of living in Provence. The products sold on the site will be to an international clientele, and include such things as soap, bath and shower gel, body lotion and shampoo. All products are made in Provence and contain such local ingredients as lavender, olive oil, honey and fruit extracts. The client is looking for a graphical identity that
expresses the "dream" associated with the mythic region of Provence, as well as embodying the traditional, high-quality nature of the ingredients and products.

Design Requirements: The supplied logo must be used for both a business card and letterhead, with the design also being suitable for use in the creation of the Dream of Provence site (this will be built by the client's in-house designers). The supplied graphic can be used in its entirety or just parts of it can be employed. The choice of typeface and color scheme is at the discretion of the designer, but the colors should be evocative of the Provence region.

Deadline:
The deadline for this Identity Challenge is March 21, 2008.

Graphics.com members can enter the Liquidlibrary Identity Challenge by downloading the supplied image and incorporating it into an original work of their own, and then uploading it here by clicking on the Admin Options menu. Submissions should be under 1MB, with a maximum of two entries per month. You must be a logged in Graphics.com member to upload an entry or comment on other entries. It's free to join here. Please read the rules and conditions before uploading an entry. Questions about the Identity Challenge can be sent here.

ASPP EDUCATION CONFERENCE

The Hi-Ways and Buy-Ways of the Picture Professional Industry

April 24 – April 27, 2008
Phoenix Arizona

Every other year ASPP holds an Education Conference, and each time we are confronted with how to make it as relevant as possible to our members, and other colleagues. This year especially it seems as though our industry is in enormous flux with companies shifting, jobs disappearing and then reappearing in a different guise, and yet we all want to somehow keep our involvement in the image profession. The question is can we make a living from it?

If you want to find out what is happening in our industry, and where we think it is heading, then you MUST come to Phoenix in April for our Education Conference. We think it’s the best value around … and it is so much fun! The full conference is just $450 for ASPP members and that includes two receptions, breakfasts and lunches on Friday and Saturday, the Gala dinner on Saturday night, as well as eight educational sessions. (PACA members are being invited as our special guests, at a rate of $540, and other members of the Imagery alliance at a rate of $590).

PACA and ASPP will also do a joint tribute to our late departed and dearest friend, Jane Kinne, on the Saturday evening.

Communicate with your t-shirt

Monday, February 18, 2008 0 comments

Last June, we wrote about a t-shirt retailer whose shirts are custom-printed with a unique text message keyword and phone number. Anyone wanting to contact the t-shirt’s wearer or learn more about the message printed on the shirt can contact the wearer via a text message.

US-based Augme goes a step further. Instead of a text message, the site lets users create a unique two-dimensional barcode. When scanned by a cell phone, the viewer’s phone links up with the website embedded in the code: could be the wearer’s MySpace profile or a favourite cause. Augme also lets users link to profile pages they create on the Augme site. And the revenue model? An online store selling customizable tees. The range of shirts is rather limited at the moment—there's an opp for other entrepreneurs! ;-)

If you're a designer, engineer or entrepreneur then you probably have got a look out for good and bad design or things that can be improved upon. Whether it be the latest in-stand magazine or the wrapping of the gum your chewing on; you're generally keeping tab. I know for a fact that on more than one occasion you've probably stopped and thought "What the Bleep were they thinking". Call me critical, but I find myself saying that several times a day.

Finally someone has come up with a way to deal with all the frustrating designs out there. Enter: redesignme.org

Where the common man can gripe about the disappointment of a product and hope that one of us can improve it.

About 60 problem products have been submitted so far, and more than 30 have been redesigned. The site's developers are now looking for design schools, investors and entrepreneurs to partner with.

Put your own skills to work on the existing makeover candidates—ranging from a ChapStick tube to ATM machines. It's a group brainstorm for good design.

This product has not been redesigned yet. Be the first!

Baden-Württemberg International Design Award

The Design Center Stuttgart, run by the government of Baden-Württemberg, is calling for entries for the Baden-Württemberg International Design Award, which in 2008 will have the theme Focus Green.
This government award is given to manufacturers and designers for forward-looking, professional and excellent design work. The “Focus in Gold” and “Focus in Silver” design awards are highly sought after as guarantees of the highest design quality. With the "Focus” topic changing each year, the competition presents a special challenge for entrants. The competition shows who has the best-designed solutions for current trends and for the topics that are of particular interest for experts and the general public. This renowned competition can look back on a long tradition and enjoys an excellent reputation both in Germany and abroad.

Focus Green – the topic
Today, sustainable development, climate protection and the conservation of our natural resources are being discussed more and more in public debate, and are playing a crucial role in political and economic decisions. In addition, environmentally friendly ways of life are finding more and more advocates, and national and international markets are reacting to meet this demand. Moreover, as raw materials become scarcer and more expensive worldwide, energy and resource-saving measures are pivotal to companies’ economic success. This is why there is a need for design and development that illustrate and implement creative solutions and innovations for more environmentally friendly products.

Final date for entries: 20 March
Award ceremony: 17 October

Type Directors Club Hebrew Weekend

April 11-13

The increasing demand for multilingual typefaces has been boosted by the latest developments in the technologies of communications. The adoption of Unicode, and the industry-wide transition to OpenType font format has put the skills and the expertise of type designers to a new test. There is a growing expectation of their being able to develop typefaces with expanded glyph sets that cover not one but a number of scripts.

To address numerous problems of non-Latin type design, the Type Directors Club is offering a series of two-day professional seminars and workshops, TDC Non-Latin Weekends.
This particular TDC event is the third seminar in the series. Two earlier non-Latin seminars - Cyrillic, led by Maxim Zhukov, and Greek, led by Gerry Leonidas - were held in 2007. The seminar on Arabic, to be coordinated by Mamoun Sakkal, is scheduled to take place this fall.
Hebrew Weekend will be conducted by Adi Stern, a well-known expert in Hebrew type design and typography and a senior lecturer at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, Israel.

TrueCrypt now available for Mac OS X

Anyone who has shared a computer with a roommate, family member, or co-worker knows it's pretty hard to keep everything organized. But beyond having separate user accounts or personal folders, some data you have on your hard drive just isn't meant to be seen by other users. Whether it's your personal account numbers, journal entries, or other private files, a secure place to store items on your shared computer is necessary for your privacy.

A while ago I found a great Windows app for creating secure volumes called TrueCrypt. This open-source (free) program offers up multiple levels of security and several different types of encryption. It's so secure that if you forget the password to your encrypted volume, you might as well just trash it. Not even your favorite computer-fixing buddy down the hall in your dorm can crack this code...seriously. Just to give you an idea, TrueCrypt uses encryption algorithms AES-256, Blowfish (448-bit key), CAST5, Serpent, Triple DES, and Twofish, or just about any combination of these methods. Don't worry, I don't know what all that means either, but TrueCrypt offers a wizard taking you through a step-by-step process explaining how to create secure volumes, how to select your encryption type, and how to create a secure password.

Xerox Hopes Its New Logo Doesn’t Say ‘Copier’

By CLAUDIA H. DEUTSCH
Published: January 7, 2008

Xerox unveiled what it says is the most sweeping transformation of its corporate identity since it dropped “Haloid” from the Haloid Xerox name in 1961. In a broadcast to employees, it announced that it would retire the staid red capital X that has dominated its logo for 40 years in favor of what Richard Wergan, vice president of advertising, calls “a brand identity that reflects the Xerox of today.”

The new logo consists of a bright red lowercase “xerox” that sits alongside a red sphere sketched with lines that link to form a stylized X. According to Anne M. Mulcahy, Xerox’s chief, that little piece of art represents the connection to customers, partners, industry and innovation.
