Candy Wrapper Museum

Monday, October 12, 2009 0 comments

Mr. Big-Shag. Chomp. Betcha’ Life. Rambo Black Flak Bubble Gum. Nice Mice. The distinctive packaging of these candies and hundreds more might be lost to the ages if it weren’t for the Candy Wrapper Museum (CWM), a project of supreme sweet tooth Darlene Lacey. “I began collecting wrappers in 1977 with an eye toward the unusual, ironic, and aesthetic, although I also collected ‘classic’ but more mundane wrappers for posterity's sake,” she writes on the CWM website, which features highlights of her collection accompanied by witty captions. And while the wrappers endure, the candy itself doesn’t hold up so well. “One thing I learned the hard way is that no matter how chemically inert or unresembling food a candy product might be, it will eventually become molecularly unstable and turn into a hideous, sticky goo.”

Art Directors Club-Nissan Student Cube competition

Art Directors Club launches inaugural student brief with Nissan. Students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate level programs in advertising, graphic design, photography, illustration and new media are eligible to enter ADC’s co-presented brief based competition.

Nissan cube® is unlike any other car on the American road. Its funky exterior is punctuated by an asymmetrical rear window and a low, wide stance. Its comfy interior is a place to have fun with friends. It offers multiple options for self expression with features like a removable shag dashboard carpet, multi-color interior mood lighting, and configurable storage.

Cube is part car, part social destination.

ADC is inviting students to address these questions:
- How would you introduce cube?
- What creative would you run?
- Where would you run the creative for maximum  reach and efficiency?

Develop a campaign, or concepts, that makes Nissan cube a part of our target’s life. The campaign shouldn’t feel like marketing, it should feel like a natural extension of where our target goes and what they do. To this end, use channels and communication vehicles you feel are most appropriate to our target’s lifestyle and what the model represents.

Local dealership location info available upon request. US-based only. International students must respond to US market conditions.

For entry and more information, please visit http://www.adcglobal.org/education/competition.

Deadline: January 29, 2010

With any systemwide upgrade, for some users, especially early adopters, things can and will go wrong. However, the new features and the chance for improved performance will always woo many to upgrade sooner rather than later. And Mac OS X 10.6, Snow Leopard is no different than any other software upgrade.
Several recent posts show Snow Leopard’s promise and potential pitfalls.

Macworld without Apple: The show will go on

Apple Inc.Image via Wikipedia
When Apple announced last year that the 2009 Macworld conference would be its last, there were some rumblings as to whether the show could continue without Apple’s presence - and the big keynote speech that the company offered every year.
No one ever said the show would die - but you kind of have to wonder how long it can make it without the draw of Apple. Still, it appears that the show will go on. IDG World Expo, which runs the show, sent out a news releasethis morning to announce two full days of technical conference content related to the new Snow Leopard operating system. In the release, Paul Kent, Macworld general manager and vice president at IDG World Expo, said: Read More>>

Google cracks down on slow gadgets

Google has seen success in large part because of their attention to speed, reliability and quality of their services. Loading up the Google homepage is usually instantaneous, and searching through their gigantic web index takes a fraction of a second.
Unfortunately for Google, they don’t have as much control over their own speed and user experience as they once did. The problem is that Google lets third party developers create applications (called Gadgets), which are often poorly programmed. Read More>>

Is there a Mickey/Spidey mashup in the future?

Saturday, September 5, 2009 0 comments
NEW YORK - AUGUST 31: A Marvel Incredible Hul...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Comic book fans are already abuzz about the news that Disney is acquiring Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion in cash and stock. The AP story says that Disney will aquire ownership of Marvel characters. The transaction still requires an antitrust review and the approval of Marvel shareholders.
“Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses,” said Ike Perlmutter, Marvel’s Chief Executive Officer. “This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world.”
We know that many Geekend readers are comics fans (Hi, I’m a Marvel… and I’m a DC! and My first comic book: What got you hooked?), so we’d like to know what you think of this announcement. Do you think this means that Marvel will be asked to start watering down its grittier comics, or do you think Disney understands the power of the geek crowd (IronMan 2 was one of the most popular stories at last month’s Comic-Con 2009) and will let Marvel operate as basically status quo? What bizarre character mashups come to mind, including interesting character names (maybe Midey or Spickey)? Let us know in the discussion.
